Judge Nagy Shehata removed from ‘Awsim Cell’ case

Cairo Appeals Court accepted on Monday a recusation request submitted against Judge Nagy Shehata in the case known publicly as "Awsim Cell".

The defendants' lawyers submitted the recusation request after Al-Watan newspaper published an interview with Shehata in which he expressed a hostile position toward the January 25 Revolution and some political movements.

Thirty defendants are accused in the case of forming a terrorist cell that aimed to suspend the constitution and to attack public and private property and judges.

Shehata is known for issuing sentences in many high profile and public opinion cases that have included mass death sentences.
