Kerry: MB death sentences challenges democratic process

US Secretary of State John Kerry met on Tuesday with his Egyptian counterpart, Nabil Fahmy, in Washington.

The meeting comes following the announcement of the Obama administration last week that it will resume part of its military aid to Egypt after a suspension of six months in the wake of the ouster of President Mohamed Morsy and the massacre of some 600 mostly unarmed protesters at Rabaa al-Adaweya.

Speaking to reporters before the meeting, Kerry said the United States wants the transitional government in Egypt to succeed, but added that sending the case documents of hundreds of supporters of Morsy to the Grand Mufti in preparation for their execution is a challenge to Egypt’s democratic process.

“The Egyptian constitution was a positive step forward,” he said. “Yet troublesome decisions within the judicial system have raised serious challenges.”
