Majestic procession to transport 22 royal mummies from Egyptian Museum on April 3

A stately procession will transport 22 royal mummies from the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square to the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization in Fustat on April 3, 2021.

Egypt’s Tourism and Antiquities Minister Khaled al-Anani met with the new museum’s CEO, representatives of the security authorities, the Supreme Council of Antiquities, and transportation officials on Wednesday to discuss the final preparations for the start of the procession.

This event is the first of its kind in the world. The ministry will transfer 22 royal mummies in a parade from the place of their current display in the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir to the place of their permanent display in the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization in Fustat.

Of the 22 mummies, 18 are kings and four are queens, among them the mummies of King Ramses II, King Seknen Ra, King Tuthmosis III, King Seti I, Queen Hatshebut, Queen Merit Amun, wife of King Amenhotep I, and Queen Ahmose-Nefertari, and wife of King Ahmose.

Egypt is anticipating the opening of the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization in Fustat and the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) in Giza later this year.
