Math teacher breaks student’s arm

Following remarks by recently-appointed Education Minister Ahmed Zaki Badr in defense of the use of corporal punishment in schools, a primary school teacher reportedly took the liberty of beating a student, breaking his arm as a result.

The victim, third-grader Seif Eddin Ahmed, reportedly suffers from both leukemia and hepatitis C.

"The math teacher, Ahmed Abdel Naiem, beat my son for failing to solve a difficult equation," said the child’s mother, Somaya Abdel Rahman. "When I approached the teacher, he said the minister had given permission to teachers to beat students."

"The principal told me he wouldn’t do anything," she added. "I would like President Mubarak to treat Seif as if he were his own grandson and take action on the matter."
