MB Supreme Guide: Constitution will not be imposed on Egyptians

In an attempt to reassure the Egyptian people about the process of drafting the new constitution, Supreme Guide of the Muslim Brotherhood Mohamed Badie said in his weekly message Thursday that the new constitution will be written by the people, and will not be imposed on them.

“The new constitution will establish the principle of the separation of powers and the devolution of power,” said Badie. “The aim was never to overthrow the head of the tyrannical regime while the debris and termites were left to eat away at the bones.”

The Constitutional Declaration issued in March stipulates that the elected bicameral Parliament will elect a constituent assembly of 100 members to write the new constitution.

Liberal and secular forces fear that Islamist parties will dominate the writing of the constitution in light of their successes in the People's Assembly and Shura Council elections.

“In order to maintain the revolution’s achievements, the people must first safeguard the state’s institutions, which they own, and realize that the advancement, development and restructuring [of these institutions] are necessary public actions during the present and future phases,” said Badie.

Badie called on all Egyptians “to put the country’s best interest ahead of anything else, to delay personal interests and narrow minded partisan desires, to respect the rule of law and to stand in the face of anyone trying to create chaos.”

Badie also spoke of "persistent smear campaigns targeting the revolution that continue in various ways, and which are repeated in various forms evident to everyone.”

He said these include “the creation of discord and disputes to disrupt the revolutionaries’ unity and ruin their gains, as well as by obstructing any positive pathway for the achievement of the revolution’s goals.”

Badie added that other means of derailing the revolution included “the creation of chaos and lawlessness through orchestrated plots which go as far as murder and result in additional martyrs, injured people and bereaved families and malicious plots to exert pressure on people’s lives by calling on them to organize strikes and sit-ins, so the people will wish to get out of the crisis, even if this means bringing back the defunct regime."
