The Supreme State Security Court agreed to a request by defense lawyers to postpone hearing what has come to be known as the case of the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) “international organization,” since members of the defense team had joined a lawyers’ strike within the context of an ongoing crisis between lawyers and judges.
The crisis began last week when a court sentenced two lawyers to five years each in prison for assaulting the chief prosecutor of the Nile Delta city of Tanta.
The session at which the defense team made its request lasted only ten minutes, but was held in an amicable atmosphere, according to witnesses. “The relationship between judges and lawyers is based on mutual respect,” said Judge Mahmoud Kamel.
The defense team also requested that the court send one of its clients, currently in detention, to hospital for treatment for a back injury and to provide his family with financial assistance since his bank accounts have been sequestered.
Defendants in the case have been charged with funding MB activities aimed at toppling Egypt’s ruling regime.
