Metro drivers striking at the Shubra al-Kheima Station on Tuesday threatened to reduce train speeds to 40 km per hour (half speed) as of Wednesday, and continue reduction by 5 km every half hour until they come to a complete halt, if their demands to fire the company president and increase their salaries are not met.
The metro, which started operation in 1987 under former President Hosni Mubarak, is a vital means of transportation in Cairo, with over 2 million passengers a day.
An official source at the Metro Authority told the state-owned MENA news agency that no trains have stopped running yet, noting that only the drivers of the Marg-Helwan and Shubra-Giza lines are on strike.
