Metro workers threaten hunger strike

Metro workers continued their sit-in at the Shohadaa (Martyrs) metro stop on Thursday and threatened to begin a hunger strike on Saturday if their demands are not met.

The workers are demanding fixed contracts they say were promised by Prime Minister Kamal al-Ganzouri.

One of the workers, Mostafa Ali, said it is necessary that their demands are met to prevent an escalation of the sit-in to work stoppages or hunger strikes. He said the Metro employees had sent their demands to the office of President Mohamed Morsy.

On Wednesday, protesters erected tents on the station platform and said they would stage an open-ended sit-in. They added that work would not be halted as employees would demonstrate during their non-working hours.
