Egypt's ruling Supreme Council of Armed Forces (SCAF) has announced it will give a new trial for an artist convicted of thuggery during the military's dispersal of a Tahrir Square sit-in on 9 March.
Amr Eissa had been sentenced by a military tribunal to three years in prison.
In a statement on its Facebook page Monday, the SCAF assured that the military council was never against the revolution youth, adding that all legal measures adopted recently were aimed at thuggery. The declaration stressed that the military had not changed its stance on the youth.
“Accordingly, the SCAF’s chairman approved a retrial of student and plastic artist Amr Eissa," the statement said.
Rights organizations had claimed that military police relied on violence to disperse protesters at Tahrir Square on 9 March. SCAF said that it detained some protesters, saying the sit-in was infiltrated by thugs who posed a security threat.
