Minister: Governors to remain in position for maximum of six years

Governors will not stay in their positions for more than two three-year terms, Local Development Minister Ahmed Zaki Abdeen said.

He said that the largest such shuffle of local leaders recently seen will take place soon.

Al-Ahram state newspaper said Monday that specific mechanisms have been determined to assess the performance of governors every three months. A report on their performance will be periodically submitted to the political leadership, and governors may be dismissed based on the results of their performance appraisal and ability to implement development plans.

Abdeen also said governors would not decide their action plans on their own, but would have to stick to the general strategy for the state. Governors, nevertheless, would be left to decide the priorities and needs of the residents of their governorate to incorporate them in the plan and set a timeframe for satisfying them.

Abdeen said instructions have been given to governors to change local leaders in order to put the right leaders in the right places, and to oust corrupt ones.

In September, President Mohamed Morsy appointed 10 new governors for Cairo, Alexandria, Monufiya, Kafr al-Sheikh, Sohag, Minya, Assiut, North Sinai, Suez and the Red Sea.
