Minister orders investigation into Sunday’s state TV blackout

The communications and information technology minister has ordered immediate investigation into the disruption of state satellite channels and 15 other TV channels on Nilesat on Sunday evening, said an official ministry source on Monday.

All television broadcasts on Nilesat, Egypt’s state-owned satellite broadcasting company, went black on Sunday evening due to a service interruption.

The terrestrial broadcast was not disrupted, however, and the satellite channels have been returned to their original frequencies, the source added.

Ali Abdel Rahman, head of the specialized Nile TV channels, told state-run Al-Ahram newspaper that the cause of the malfunction was unknown.

Nilesat Managing Director Salah Hamza said the disruption came from outside Egypt.
