Mohamed al-Zawahiri appeals death sentence

Abdel Aziz al-Gamal and Mohamed al-Zawahiri, brother of prominent Al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri, have appealed their death sentences in a military court. Mohamed al-Zawahiri was sentenced to death for terrorist activities.

From inside the Aqrab Prision, Zawahiri said, “We appealed the military court’s death sentence in hopes that we would win the appeal and be retried, especially since we were sentenced in absentia by a military court.”

He went on to say, “We were promised that our case would be reconsidered and that we would be dealt with differently, especially since we are victims of the former regime, which treated us in a brutal manner.”

In related news, more than 30 members of the Jama’a al-Islamiya group at the Aqrab prison, which is known for its heavy security measures, complained of their continued detention, despite the fact that their prison mates, who had served between a quarter and three quarters of their prison sentences, had been released.

Yehia Taher, who had been sentenced to life in prison in relation to the case known as the “returnees from Afghanistan and Sudan” said, “We are only demanding equality with the other political prisoners who have been released, especially since our legal status is similar to theirs.”
