Supporters and opponents of deposed president Mohamed Morsy fought late Monday in the al-Sahel region at Naga Hammadi, Qena, Upper Egypt. The clashes followed a march by Morsy loyalists in which they chanted slogans against army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who deposed Morsy in early July.
The march, which set off following evening prayers, proceeded into the streets of Naga Hammadi and blocked the city’s traffic. The protesters chanted “Egypt is Islamic in spite of secularists” and “will bring Sisi down” before the march evolved into a fight in which clubs and stones were used.
No casualties were reported.
Egypt has been experiencing bloody violence between Morsy opponents and his Islamist supporters who denounce his removal as a military coup and demand his reinstatement.
At least 300 people have been killed since protests erupted on 30 June against Morsy’s regime, which had prompted the army to overthrow the president.
