Morsy endorses new thanaweya amma law, minister says

Education Minister Gamal al-Araby said that President Mohamed Morsy has endorsed the application of a new law on the final years of high school, or thanaweya amma, starting from next year.

The new law, which was passed by the People’s Assembly, will go into effect regardless of the change in cabinets, Araby said during a ceremony honoring top high school and technical school students.

The ministry is preparing curricula for the new system, which reduces the thanaweya amma from two years to one, he added.

“The new law will be applied beginning with the educational year 2013-2014,” Araby said. “The new curricula would consider international standards and will take the load off students and their families.”

Araby said that although the percentage of passing students in 2012 was five percent lower than last year, it proves the success of the ministry’s management of the thanaweya amma exams under exceptional conditions.
