Ruling party MP Zakaria Azmy has asked Parliamentary Speaker Fathi Sorour to file a lawsuit against Al-Masry Al-Youm for publishing "defamatory" cartoons lambasting Egypt's parliament.
“As I understand it, the cartoons portray parliamentarians as cats and dogs,” said Azmy, who went on to stress his respect for press freedoms–as long as those freedoms were used for constructive purposes.
Azmy insisted that Egypt's recently concluded parliamentary elections had been conducted in a "free and fair" manner.
“We haven’t received a single lawsuit challenging the assembly's legitimacy,” he said.
Sorour has reportedly referred Azmy’s complaint to a parliamentary media committee for review.
