In a phone call with Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri on Tuesday, President Hosni Mubarak stressed Egypt’s commitment to the security and stability of southern Lebanon.
Mubarak’s assurances follow the outbreak of border clashes on Tuesday morning between Israeli forces and the Lebanese army.
Mubarak also expressed Egypt’s commitment to Lebanese sovereignty, calling on all parties involved to show restraint.
Mubarak reportedly received the call from Hariri, who briefed the Egyptian president on the latest developments regarding Israeli aggression against southern Lebanon.
The Egyptian Foreign Ministry has reportedly contacted US, French and UN officials to call for stepped-up pressure on Israel to refrain from military escalations in southern Lebanon and to halt all violations of Security Council Resolution 1701, adopted following Israel’s 2006 war against Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah.
Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul-Gheit, for his part, has reiterated Egypt’s solidarity with the Lebanese government in the face of repeated Israeli violations of Lebanese sovereignty.
