Mubarak’s doctor was threatened with murder, says Heidelberg hospital

Mubarak’s German physician, Dr Markus Buechler, received emails containing death threats, said Annette Tuffs, spokeswoman of the Heidelberg University Hospital in Germany, on Tuesday.

However, Tuffs said that this was not the reason Buechler did not fly to Egypt to examine the former president.

“Buechler feels he would not be of any help to Mubarak now,” Tuffs told the German news agency DPA on Tuesday. “He also does not want to take risks, given the unclear situation.”

For his part, Buechler told the German newspaper Die Süddeutsche Zeitung on Monday that he had gained the impression he would be pressured into reporting that Mubarak was not well enough to stand trial.

He added that the operation he performed for Mubarak in March 2010 was successful, and that there was nothing more he could do for him.

Concerning his relationship with Mubarak, Buechler said that he treats all his patients equally.

Mubarak’s lawyer, Farid al-Deeb, claimed recently that unknown persons sent Buechler messages threatening him with murder if he examined Mubarak.
