New law set to crack down on copyright infringement

New legislation has been enacted by Culture Minister Farouk Hosni to clamp down on copyright infringement. The new law was issued in an effort to protect the rights of audio and video production, according to Hosni’s ministry.

The Central Department of Censorship will now be tasked with determining copyright ownership for each production and shutting down sites that infringe on legally copyrighted material.

Legal consultant for the Ministry of Culture Ashraf al-Ashmawy said any website illegally posting material will be immediately shut down.

A ministry statement said a complaint made by the Egyptian Central Association of Audio and Video Producers, a member of the International Union of Producers, on the broadcast and display of productions without consent prompted action by the ministry.
