New lawsuits against interior minister over prisoner compensation

Ibrahim Ali, lawyer for Jama'a al-Islamiya, on Wednesday said he has filed five new lawsuits against Interior Minister Ahmed Gamal Eddin to call for his removal and imprisonment.

Ali said the minister has refused to implement rulings ordering the payment of compensation to members of the group for their years of imprisonment and torture. So far, 70 cases have been filed against Gamal Eddin for the same reason.

Ali said the court will review the cases on 24 November. He said that a court had ordered compensation totaling LE400 million to more than 15,000 political detainees from Jama'a al-Islamiya and jihadis.

The minister risks dismissal from his post and imprisonment under the current laws by refusing to pay the compensation, he added.
