The Salafi-led Nour Party pledged not to “stand by helplessly” as former Vice President Omar Suleiman runs for president, party spokesperson Nader Bakkar said.
On his Facebook page, Bakkar said the first step toward escalation will be to vote on the political isolation law, which he said will prevent icons of the Mubarak regime from running for leadership positions.
Bakkar added that other options that will be proposed at the right moment.
Suleiman arrived at the Presidential Elections Commission Sunday afternoon to submit his candidacy papers amid crowds of supporters. He submitted his papers and endorsement signatures amid tight security measures.
Suleiman’s nomination provoked an angry response from several activists who said it threatens to reproduce the former regime.
Suleiman, 75, served as intelligence chief for 18 years and was appointed vice president by former President Hosni Mubarak under popular pressure during the 18-day uprising last year.
On Monday, the Islamist-dominated Parliament made a preliminary agreement to amend the Presidential Elections Law by adding a provision that would prevent Mubarak regime figures from running in the race, scheduled for 23 and 24 May.
