Officers to stand criminal trial for torturing lawyer to death

Two police officers were referred to a criminal trial on Wednesday over charges of torturing a lawyer to death, a statement by the General Prosecution said.

Evidence provided in investigations implicate the two police officers from Matareya Police Station, east of Cairo, into the deadly torture of Karim Hamdy.

Hamdy was arrested last February over charges of affiliation with the Muslim Brotherhood and involvement in anti-government protests. He was declared dead a couple of days later.

While officers at the Matareya Police Station said Hamdy, 28, was asphyxiated due to overcrowding in his cell, the prosecution’s statement on Wednesday referred to initial forensic reports which had concluded that the victim’s body bore bruises and blood clots, suggesting possible physical torture.
