Palestinian faction urges Egypt to save reconciliation

A senior leader of the Palestinian faction Islamic Jihad has called on Egypt to prevent the collapse of the recent reconciliation agreement between Palestinian groups.

In statements quoted by Jordanian newspaper Addustour on Wednesday, Islamic Jihad member Khaled al-Batsh urged Egyptian authorities to meet with Palestinian groups in Cairo as soon as possible to discuss hurdles facing the reconciliation.

In May, Hamas, Fatah and other Palestinian factions signed an Egypt-brokered agreement that ended a four-year chasm, which had lasted since 2007, when Hamas took over the Gaza Strip.

Batsh atrributed the delay in activating the deal to the current dispute between Fatah and Hamas over who will head their anticipated coalition government.

He also criticized Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas for his insistence on giving incumbent Prime Minister Salam Fayyad the post.
