Petrol Ministry to provide additional gas supplies to Energy Ministry

Petroleum Minister Sameh Fahmy met with Electricity Minister Hassan Younis on Monday to inform the latter that his ministry had agreed to provide the Electricity Ministry with additional gas supplies with a view toward achieving Younis' strategic plan for 2011, according to official sources.

Under the terms of the agreement, the Electricity Ministry will receive eight million cubic meters of gas daily with which to operate the Fayoum and 6 October City power stations, which have a combined capacity of 1000 megawatts.

Fahmy also said his ministry would look into longstanding requests for new power stations accounted for in the 2011-2017 five-year plan.

The minister also issued instructions to supply power stations with high-quality imported mazut.

Official sources say the additional gas supplies will prevent an energy crisis that had been anticipated for the summer of 2011, just in advance of presidential elections.

In a related development, the Electricity Ministry has signed an agreement with the Kuwaiti Al-Kharafy Group to build eight small power stations with a 150-megawatt capacity each to prevent expected power cuts next summer. The agreement is worth LE2.7 billion.
