PM inspects revitalization of Historic Azbakeya Garden ahead of opening

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly Saturday 6/9/2025 inspected Azbakeya Garden after finalization of its restoration, in preparation for its official reopening.

The premier is accompanied by Minister of Local Development Manal Awad, Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities Sherif al-Sherbiny, and Governor of Cairo Ibrahim Saber Khalil.

Head of the National Organization for Urban Harmony Mohamed Abu Saada also accompanied Madbouly alongside Head of the Central Agency for Reconstruction Mahmoud Nassar, Chairman of Arab Contractors Ahmed el Assar, Country Director for UN-Habitat Egypt Ahmed Rezk, as well as senior officials from the housing and local development ministries, Cairo governorate and relevant bodies.

Housing Minister Sherbiny said that Azbakeya Garden is one of Cairo’s oldest parks and the only major green space within the plan of Khedivial Cairo, noting that the Ministry of Housing undertook its restoration as part of the Historic Cairo revitalization program, in a bid to bring back the garden’s splendor as a cultural and recreational landmark.

The project is part of the revival of Khedivial Cairo project that entails the redevelopment of historic theater spaces, the new Azbakeya book market, the fencing club, Opera Garage, heritage buildings along Qasr al-Nil Street, the Bourse passages, and al-Tawheed Mosque, Sherbiny said.

During the tour, Sherbiny reviewed the garden’s restored features, including the historic lake, fountain, Roman theater, pergolas, cafeteria, restaurant, and boundary walls.

Madbouly directed developing a comprehensive operational plan to ensure efficient management and long-term preservation of the garden, and safeguarding the substantial restoration efforts.

Also, Madbouly inspected the new Azbakeya book market where the Housing Minister expounded the implementation rate of book kiosks covering 805 square meters, along with upgraded public facilities such as restrooms and an administration building.

The Prime Minister handed over contracts to several kiosk owners who had been relocated from the old Azbakeya wall, expressing the state’s commitment to supporting booksellers in a modern and organized way.

Booksellers, for their part, voiced appreciation for the new market, emphasizing their pride in being part of this transformation and their readiness to work in a clean and civilized environment aligned with Egypt’s vision for the New Republic.
