Citizens are worried that security presence is still noticeably absent in the streets of Cairo and Giza except in a few squares.
The absence of security contradicts the statements of the newly-appointed minister of interior affairs, who made reassurances that policemen will be back in their positions within a few days.
Al-Masry Al-Youm tried to inquire about the issue but the minister’s office manager always said the minister was in a meeting.
Al-Masry Al-Youm took to the Cairo streets and found few policemen, with much unmanned space between them and mostly in groups. Only three riot police vehicles were seen near the state security building in 6th of October City.
Security sources, speaking anonymously, said police presence will increase gradually, and that while places downtown are being secured by the army security there cannot be enhanced.
The sources added there will be greater police presence after protests end in Tahrir Square and denied that protests will be secured by police.
Refaat Abdel Hamid, an expert of criminal sciences, warned against minimal police presence in streets as no laws govern popular committees and no one supervises such voluntary security efforts.
