Policeman killed in Upper Egypt illegal weapons raid

A police officer was killed and two others injured during a raid Sunday for unlicensed firearms, Egyptian security sources said on Monday.

Sources in the Qena Governorate police department said the search targeted individuals in the village of Hamradoum, Naga Hammadi (600km south of Cairo), who possess unlicensed firearms.

The suspects fled their homes to hide in nearby farmland. They then shot at the officers, killing Dahy Mohamed and injuring Shazly Ramadan and Ashour Abul Yazid.

Police later arrested three suspects carrying unlicensed weapons.

The Interior Ministry said the suspects confessed to using weapons for retribution against other families.

Security authorities continue to search for the remaining suspects.
