Prosecution orders arrest of former MP accused of indecency

Banha Prosecutor Ahmed Lotfy al-Deeb has ordered the arrest of former MP Ali Wanees for questioning over allegations he committed an obscene act with a young woman on an agricultural road in Tokh.

Wanees, a Salafi Asala Party member of the dissolved People's Assembly, has denied the allegations.

Earlier this month, police said they apprehended him in an indecent situation in Qalyubiya Governorate. Wanees is also accused of assaulting a police officer during the incident.

The woman allegedly in his car, Nesrine Ramadan Abdel Aaty, is being detained pending investigations. The Banha University agriculture student from the village of Moshtohor told investigators that she went to see Wanees to borrow money for a friend.

Wanees told the people of his legislative constituency in a statement after Friday prayers on 8 June that "this was an attempt to distort his image and defame him."

The Banha prosecutor ordered his arrest upon receiving word from the People’s Assembly General Secretariat that the MP's legal immunity had ended with the dissolution of the assembly.
