Protest called off over perceived power struggle

The Union of Revolutionary Youth’s executive bureau has postponed calls for a million-man protest originally planned for Friday, dubbed the “Constitution for all Egyptians” protest.

The demonstration, which the union began calling for a few days ago, was slated to be against the Islamist-dominated constituent assembly, which organizers said was “imposing guardianship on people.”

In a statement on Thursday, the union said it decided during an urgent meeting on Wednesday to begin talks with political parties represented in Parliament to seek a solution, in light of the ongoing disagreement between the Muslim Brotherhood and the ruling military council.

Despite its criticism of the Brotherhood's stances, the union said that it would not take sides in the dispute, which was prompted by the Brotherhood's statements that military rules are holding on to a "failing cabinet" either to “thwart the revolution” or rig the upcoming presidential poll.

Tamer al-Qady, the union’s spokesperson, said the main reason behind postponing the protest is that the union does not want to be involved in the struggle over power. The union is also awaiting a ruling from the State Council that could nullify the formation of the constituent assembly and is set to be delivered next month.
