Protesters block court inauguration ceremony in Gharbiya

Several lawyers and Popular Current supporters blocked Justice Minister Ahmed Mekky from inaugurating the new Santa District Court in Gharbiya Governorate Tuesday.

Chanting “liar” and “Santa is not honored by your presence,” they prevented Mekky from cutting the ribbon or entering through the court’s main gate.

Protesters also rallied against President Mohamed Morsy’s government and raised banners with the image of late Popular Current member Mohamed al-Gendy, who they say was tortured to death by police.

ONA news agency, owned by the ONtv channel, quoted Mekky saying he supported state findings that blamed Gendy’s death on a car accident.

According to Mekky, the interior minister may have the report published publically.

However, the justice minister added that Gendy’s family was free to order its own autopsy.

Mekky concluded by saying the public has the right to know the truth.
