Protests dispersed, arrests as activists mark uprising anniversary

Officers boarding three police armored vehicles dispersed a protest near the Journalists Syndicate in Downtown Cairo with bird shots and tear gas as protests continue in commemoration of the 2011 uprising.

Security sources told Al-Masry Al-Youm that 16 were arrested for “rioting” at the nearby Abdel Moneim Riyad, which leads to Tahrir Square, the epicenter of the uprising against former president Hosni Mubarak.

The protesters were condemning the shooting of socialist activist Shaimaa al-Sabbagh on Sunday, which is widely blamed on police.

An Interior Ministry source has said that 11 people were killed and 27 injured during a day of protests.
