Public prosecutor investigates Brotherhood charges over Friday protest

Public Prosecutor Abdel Meguid Mahmoud on Tuesday ordered investigation into charges filed by Muslim Brotherhood lawyers accusing protesters of assaulting and beating 99 group members during last Friday's demonstration.

The lawyers accused administrators of the Facebook groups “Al-Magholoun al-Arab” [Anonymous Arabs] and “Moshagheboun” [Rioters] of inciting the assaults.

The clashes took place on Friday during a demonstration that had initially been called for by liberal forces to criticize President Mohamed Morsy’s performance in his first 100 days, but after defendants in the Battle of the Camel trial were acquitted the Muslim Brotherhood and the Freedom and Justice Party called for protests against the public prosecutor.

The public prosecution announced on Monday the start of investigations into 53 complaints filed over the clashes that took place in Tahrir Square on Friday.

These complaints accuse acting Freedom and Justice Party head Essam al-Erian, pro-Brotherhood preacher Safwat Hegazy, Mohamed al-Beltagy and other leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood of mobilizing their supporters to use violence against peaceful demonstrators, leading to clashes, injuries and destruction of property.
