Qalyubiya governor pledges development as thousands celebrate Sham al-Nessim

Qalyubiya's governor has said that developing the Nile Barrages, known as Kanater, is a top priority for him.

Adel Zayed said he hopes the area will once again become a favorite outdoor destination for Egypt's poor.

Since early this morning, thousands of Egyptians went to the Benha Nile Corniche and Kanater to celebrate Sham al-Nessim, a springtime celebration that dates back to the pharaohs.

Zayed said he will prepare a proposal on the subject in coordination with the Irrigation Ministry to submit to the Cabinet of Ministers.

Mostafa al-Sayed Moussa, head of Kanater, said the city council and the health, veterinary medicine, traffic, irrigation and supply departments have coordinated efforts to receive visitors in Kanater, provide their needs for different commodities and supply ambulances in cases of food poisoning or drowning are reported.

Fermented fish called fesikh, a customary dish served for Sham al-Nessim, can sometimes caused food poisoning if not prepared safely.

Moussa added that the operations room has so far received no complaints. The traffic and security plan, supervised by Qalyubiya security chief Major General Ahmed Salem Gad, has proven successful in maintaining security and ensuring smooth flow of traffic.
