Rachid: No risk of destabilization in Egypt

Rome–Egypt is not heading toward destabilization and the government will be able to manage discontent that has led to demonstrations, the country's trade and industry minister said on Wednesday.

"I don't think, based on the information I have on events of the past few days and hours, that Egypt is heading toward destabilization," Rachid Mohamed Rachid told a news conference after meeting the Italian trade minister.

"I think the discontent can be managed," he said, adding that Cairo had already carried out economic and political reforms.

Egypt said on Wednesday it would ban demonstrations and detain protesters, seeking to draw a line under unprecedented protests against President Hosni Mubarak's nearly 30-year rule.
