Conductors at Egyptian National Railways ended their partial strike late Sunday after the Transport Ministry agreed to disburse a LE600 allowance as a reward for a revenue hike.
The drivers had protested to receive the allowance by slowing down their trains while threatening to cease to operate them completely.
Reacting to the strike, ministry spokesperson Ahmed Ibrahim said Minister Saad el-Geyoushi said the amount was disbursed as a reward for “excellent performance”, which drove revenues between September and November up by 29 percent, compared to the same period in 2014.
Railway services had witnessed several strikes for payments since the breakout of the 2011 uprising.
The railway authority said in a closing balance statement last July that it sustained losses worth LE5 billion in 2014.
