Businessman Mansour al-Gammal died on Monday, his son Yahya announced.
Sources said that he died of coronavirus.
His death came a few days after his son announced that his case was worsening and that he had been placed on ventilator.
Gammal was a renowned businessman with economic projects on multiple continents.
He graduated from the Faculty of Law and obtained his PhD in Economics from the Sorbonne.
Gammal began his career as a diplomat in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, then was appointed to the Arab League and promoted to the position of Head of Mission at the age of 28.
The main reason for his resignation from the Arab League was the transfer of its headquarters to Tunisia after the Arab countries objected to the Camp David agreement signed between Egypt and Israel.
Gammal left politics because of his father and started his life as an economist. He first began his economic life by working on his family’s projects, and then began developing projects abroad.
He held the unsalaried position of financial and economic advisor at the Belgian Royal Palace and founded the Arab-Belgian-Luxembourg Chamber of Commerce.
He spent most of his life abroad and married a Belgian woman. Gammal is survived by three children.
Gammal had a close relationship with the family of the late President Hosni Mubarak, and he is the uncle of Khadija el-Gammal, the wife of Mubarak’s son, Gamal Mubarak.
Gammal owned the Galala Group for Real Estate Development, and had economic projects in Egypt, Europe and America.
He also owned a cobalt production project in the Republic of the Congo and a financial consulting office in New York.
