Risks from rapid population growth exceed that of terrorism: CAPMAS chief

Major General Abu Bakr al-Guindy, head of the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS), has said that the threat posed to Egypt by its exponential population growth exceeds the risk of terrorism.

In remarks on Monday, Guindy added that the most dangerous aspect of the rapid growth rate is that people do not realize there is a problem.

The population growth rate in Egypt is double the rate of other developing countries, and five times the growth rate of developed countries. The rate of increase is highest among Egypt's poor, said Guindy.

More than 60 percent of the population are below the age of 30 and 75 percent of the population are less than 40 years old.

On Sunday, CAPMAS declared that at 10 p.m., the population of Egypt reached 91 million, having grown by a million in just six months.
