Ruling military council denies postponing parliament vote

Egypt’s ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) remains firm on the September date for parliamentary elections, according to a military source who denied that the council approved rescheduling them for December.

On Sunday, Deputy Prime Minister Yehia al-Gamal said the council agreed to extend the country’s transitional period to December.

The military source, who asked to remain anonymous, said SCAF will stick to the results of the March referendum on constitutional amendments, adding that the primary mission for the next parliament will be to draft a new constitution that includes parameters for presidential elections.

Secular and liberal political groups have called for drafting a new constitution before parliamentary elections. They fear that established groups such the Muslim Brotherhood and former regime members may, due to their superior organization, control the new parliament and therefore have free reign to write constitution.
