The Salafi Nour Party’s supreme committee has prohibited prominent Salafi figure Abdel Moneim al-Shahat from issuing press statements, after the latter accused the late Nobel Laureate Naguib Mahfouz of promoting prostitution, drugs and other vices through his writings.
“The man was speaking for himself and not the rest of us,” said party spokesman Yousry Hammad. “His remarks made us lose 20 seats in the parliamentary election run-offs.”
