Second Army commander surveys Suez Canal security

Major General Ahmed Wasfy, commander of the Second Field Army, has surveyed security measures on Egypt's Suez Canal, amid growing signs that further violence could break out in the restive Sinai Peninsula.

Wasfy checked security measures applied along the waterway between Port Said and the borders of the Third Field Army's jurisdiction in the area, along with borders along the canal region.

The road beside the waterway witnessed a heavy security presence, as army and police forces were intensified in the area.

Second Field Army aircraft are continuing to monitor the passage of ships down the Suez Canal, as well as intermittently monitoring the road parallel to the waterway.

Wasfy visits Port Said on a regular basis, while also leading an army counter-terror initiative in Arish, North Sinai.

A source at the Suez Canal Authority revealed that a joint operations room run by both Egypt's Second and Third Army, with the help of special forces, uses surveillance cameras to help secure the waterway and its eastern shore in Sinai.
