Security forces intensified their presence at Cairo's Sphinx Square in Mohandiseen, preventing supporters of ousted President Mohamed Morsy from advancing further after gunfire was heard in the area.
Security forces also closed the 15 May Bridge located above Sphinx Square to prevent protesters from marching onto the bridge as they did in mid-August and allegedly fired on local residents.
Some of the marchers fled to side streets when they heard shots ring out.
Most of the buildings' gates were closed to prevent unknown people from climbing on to nearby rooftops.
Thousands of pro-Morsy protesters organised a march in Mohandiseen to reject the ongoing detention of Brotherhood leaders. The marchers set off from Mahroussa Mosque on Ahmed Orabi. They also called for the departure of Defense Minister Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.
Demonstrators marched on Wadi al-Nil tunnel before reaching Mostafa Mahmoud and Fawzi Rammah squares.
The protesters raised banners reading “30/8, another revolution." They stopped at a building affiliated with the Kuwaiti Embassy and chanted against 30 June protests, which led to the overthrow of Morsy, describing them as a coup.
One of the protesters, Umm Omar, said protests will continue until Morsy returns to power, saying he is the symbol of perseverance and freedom. Another protester stressed that the protests will remain peaceful.
