A senior figure in Egypt's ruling National Democratic Party (NDP) has said the regime rules Egypt with a single-party approach and sees no other players in the political arena.
At a seminar organized by the American Chamber of Commerce in Cairo, Mustafa al-Fiqqi, who also heads the Shura Council’s Arab Affairs Committee, said: “Some people brand the opposition as angels and the government as devils, but the truth is that all political parties, including the NDP, are devilish.”
“I know the history of some persons within the opposition and am familiar with the way they think, compared to others in the government,” al-Fiqqi added.
Al-Fiqqi stressed that all Egyptian political parties without exception are “weak,” attributing his argument to the parties’ lack of a “strong popular base.”
“Despite being an NDP member, I disagree with the party’s current positions which amounts to an extension of socialism and the adoption of a single-party system,” he said.
Al-Fiqqi said Egypt has recently seen the phenomenon of the elite’s combination of both wealth and power which has led to corruption, as well as the mixing of religion and politics, fueling radicalism.
