Sisi, Italy’s PM discuss latest regional developments over phone call

President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on Friday 10/4/2026 discussed in a phone call with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, the latest developments in the Middle East, said Presidential Spokesman Mohamed al-Shennawy.

In this regard, President Sisi stressed the importance of preserving regional peace and stability, through building on the recent ceasefire reached between the US and Iran, while launching serious negotiations to resolve outstanding issues between Washington and Tehran.

President Sisi briefed Meloni on Egypt’s intensive efforts with various parties to halt escalation, reaffirming Cairo’s full support for the security and stability of Arab states and its total rejection and condemnation of any violations of their sovereignty or any threats to their peoples’ resources.

On her part, the Italian prime minister voiced her deep appreciation for Egypt’s endeavors to consolidate the ceasefire, agreeing with President Sisi on the need to maintain regional stability. She also underlined the significance of reopening the Strait of Hormuz to international navigation without imposing fees, safeguarding the security of Gulf states, and striking a deal on Iran’s nuclear program that includes relevant guarantees, while taking all necessary measures to prevent a renewed outbreak of the war. She affirmed Italy’s keenness to enhance cooperation and political coordination with Egypt to achieve these goals.

The spokesperson stated that they also tackled updates in Lebanon, where the Italian premier said her country looks forward to initiating direct negotiations leading to a ceasefire, noting that Hezbollah has made miscalculations, while the Israeli response exceeded the limits of legitimate self-defense.

She also underlined the need for the success of the US-Iran talks hosted by Pakistan in reaching a final agreement to end the war in the region.

The two leaders mulled ways to strengthen Egyptian-Italian relations across various fields, particularly in trade and economy. They also explored means of advancing bilateral collaboration in tackling illegal migration, with the Italian prime minister expressing her appreciation for Egypt’s tangible efforts in this respect.
