Six Egyptian fishermen returned to their hometown in Borollos, Kafr al-Sheikh, early Monday after surviving a kidnapping attempt by Iranian pirates near Kuwait.
Villagers in Shorafaa cheered the fishermen upon their return.
Eight Iranian pirates reportedly attempted to hijack the fishermen’s boat while they were in Kuwaiti territorial waters but were met with defiance by the sailors.
The confrontation ended with the seven pirates fleeing by jumping into the water. One pirate was caught and handed over to Kuwaiti authorities, according to Ahmed Abdu Nassar, who heads an association of Kafr al-Sheikh’s fishermen.
