Sudan denies selecting nominee for Arab League head

Sudan's foreign ministry denied reports that the country offered a successor to the outgoing secretary general of the Arab League, Amr Moussa, whose term ends in May.

In a report published on Monday, Sudan's foreign minister, Ali Karti, told Sudanese newspaper Al Rayaam that no official decision by the government or ruling party had been taken concerning the nomination of Mostafa Othman Ismail, Sudan's presidential advisor, for the post.

He reiterated his country’s rejection of Egypt’s nominee, Mostafa al-Fiqqi.

The Sudan News Agency cited an anonymous source as saying the rejection of Fiqqi's nomination is based on his position toward Sudan, as expressed in articles published by Egyptian state-run newspaper Al-Ahram.

Fiqqi’s selection also drew criticism from Egypt’s revolutionaries because of his background as an official in the toppled regime of Hosni Mubarak.
