Suicide linked to TikTok challenge spreads controversy in Egypt

A twelve-year old boy died by hanging after reportedly imitating a controversial challenge spread across TikTok, referred to as the ‘Charlie Challenge.

The boy’s family found him hanged in his bedroom in Bahtim area of Shubra al-Khaima, Qalyubia Governorate.

During the investigations, the child’s mother said that she had found a video clip about how to use the “Devils Game” or the “Charlie Challenge” on the TikTok application.

The mother concluded that her son was trying to imitate the game and hanged himself with a rope.

 

Dangerous games

The controversial challenge involves placing one pencil on top of another on a piece of paper divided into “yes” and “no”. They are in a square divided into four sections, and in each part written the words yes and no distributed evenly.

It is said that the players, who are usually children or adolescents, communicate with the spirit of a child called “Charlie” to summon him, then ask him and his answer is “no” or “yes”.

Then rules are issued through the game include cutting arteries, committing suicide by hanging, or others.
