Supreme Judicial Council appoints female judges

The Supreme Judicial Council is appointing female judges from the Administrative Prosecution and the State Cases Authority.

“They will be appointed once they pass the oral and written tests,” said Mohamed Mahgoub, the secretary general of the council.

Mahgoub denied reports of electronic news sites claiming the council is appointing women to the General Prosecution.

Though not common, Egypt does have precedence. During the end of the Mubarak regime in 2010, as many as 42 women judges presided over general courts.

Nonetheless, female judges have faced much discrimination over the years. For example, on 15 February 2010, 334 out of 380 judges on the State Council voted to ban women from joining.
