Swiss ambassador: Mubarak assets to be returned on condition

Swiss Ambassador to Egypt Dominique Verger has announced that his country will return the frozen assets of the Mubarak family in full if it can be proven that the funds were accrued illegally.

Verger also heads the Swiss delegation that is currently visiting Egypt to find out whether the money was transferred from Egyptian banks or from banks abroad during the revolution, and whether it was sent before or after Mubarak stepped down.

He denied an early statement by a Swiss lawyer who said returning the money could take 17 years, and said it should not take that long.

He also said it was difficult to identify how much of the SF410 million that had been frozen could be attributed to Mubarak.
