TE board discusses standoff with communication ministry

Telecom Egypt’s chief Mohamed Salem and managing director Ossama Yassin held an emergency meeting Sunday morning to discuss the company’s standoff with the Telecommunication and Information Technology Ministry (MCIT), Al-Masry Al-Youm has learned.

TE, Egypt’s sole landline telephone company, and the exclusive holder of the Internet infrastructure, had sent an open letter to Minister Khaled Negm decrying what it described as “unguided steps” taken by the ministry against the company which “damage the interests of its stakeholders and workers”.

The company accused the MCIT of “imposing pressures” on it to oblige it to yield to cell phone companies' demands and reduce leasing rates for the communications infrastructure, a move which culminated in the the ministry’s decision to remove TE’s former CEO, Mohamed al-Nawawy, in May.
