Thousands of leaflets distributed calling for 25 January demonstration

Young people and political movements have intensified their calls for citizens to participate in a demonstration on 25 January, the first anniversary of Egypt's revolution, by distributing thousands of leaflets.

The April 6 Youth Movement played video footage showing abuses by the army in Cairo's Matareya Square on Wednesday as part of its "Liars" campaign against the military council.

In a statement issued Wednesday, the movement claimed its members were attacked in Cairo's Zeitoun district by thugs and former members of the disbanded National Democratic Party, superficially injuring one of them in the forehead.

The movement also hung thousands of posters in the streets of Alexandria and other cities, calling on the armed forces not to succumb to the ruling military council, as their main role is to protect the country against external threats, not to get involved in politics.

Taqadom al-Khatib of the National Association for Change said it has also distributed thousands of leaflets in several cities to mobilize for the 25 January demonstrations and request that the military council hand over power to a civilian authority.

Meanwhile, the Union of Revolutionary Youth said in a statement on Wednesday that the military council plans to “abort” the revolution, and that the former regime has not fallen because the council continues to back corruption.

The statement also accused the council of trying to tarnish the image of the revolutionaries in the “corrupt” media by portraying them as thugs.
