Tourism ministry marks 20 years of papyrus restoration lab at Egyptian Museum

The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, through the Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA), marked the 20th anniversary of the Papyrus Restoration Laboratory at the Egyptian Museum with a photo exhibition titled “20 Years of the Papyrus Restoration Laboratory at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo (2005–2025).”

The event was organized in cooperation with the Italian Embassy in Cairo and the Italian Cultural Institute.

The exhibition documents the establishment and development of the laboratory, which began as a joint initiative in 1998 with the Museo del Papiro in Syracuse. The lab was officially inaugurated in 2005 with financial support from the Region of Sicily and the Province of Syracuse, alongside technical cooperation from Italian specialists.

The photo display documents restoration work on papyrus scrolls recovered in fragile condition and outlines the laboratory’s role in training Egyptian conservators through specialized workshops in scientific examination and digital documentation.
